Bollywood Actresses

Can we say that we are only concerned with whatever we see in front of us? Well, surely what is in front of us holds true for being the ‘thing of the moment’ but we can’t deny the fact that inspiration and memories from the past and aspirations of the future impacts the current situation. It seems like yesterday that we are all drooling over the peppiness of Preity Zinta and the beauty of Aishwarya Rai but today we hardly find them in any movie, their public appearances are limited to cricket matches and award functions. This is what has happened to the actresses who were popular in the 70s, 60s, 50s or before that. With time, the idea of beauty also changed and the parameters of becoming an actor changed significantly.

Let’s have a look into the achievements of the actresses over the years.

Nargis was regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time. She was known for her immense talent and beauty. She was the first female actor to receive Padma Shri and the first National award. She gave many hits over the years – Awara, Barsaat, Andaaz, Shri 420. The other decade-defining popular actress is Madhubala, who was also known as the screen goddess, and was frequently compared to Marilyn Monroe. Sharmila Tagore acted in Bengali and Hindi films and garnered a place herself for intense roles. Vyjayanthimala was a beautiful dancer and an iconic actress of all time. The other prominent actresses were Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, Sadhana and many more.

In the 1970s, the fashion trend changed with the use of bell bottoms, polka dots, and big collars. Many of the Bollywood actresses became household names. Actresses like Hema Malini – the dream girl, Helen, Parveen Babi, Zeenat Aman, and Neetu Singh were some prominent actresses of that time.

With time, the next decade witnessed some changes in fashion and stories, more realistic stories were adapted for the screen and women-oriented films were made – Sparsh, Sadma, Arth. Abhimaan, Chandni. Actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Smita Patil, and Amrita Singh grabbed the opportunity to act in some promising roles.

In the 90s, Bollywood changed its portrayal of characters with more songs, elaborately done film sets and films were a full-action pack of comedy, action, and drama. Madhuri went on to do some great roles in the 90s also, in films like “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”. Other female actors who became sensational were Raveena Tandon, Kajol, Sonali Bendre, Urmila Matondkar, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, etc.

In the year 2000 and later, film stars and filmmakers reinvented themselves and. The storyline changes with time and we saw the less dramatic portrayal of the Indian women. The actresses of this decade were Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, etc. But this time, with a changing mindset, we created a place for married and older actresses too. Many of the actresses who were active in early 2000 are still active and are their movies are doing phenomenally well amongst the masses.

Taking about the newer generation of actresses like Alia Bhat, Sara Ali Khan, and Janvi Kapoor – we believe they will have a much longer career as compared to the former actresses, as our industry is creating films on and for all age groups and classes.
