Dharmendera – Hema Malini Duo
Branded as Bollywood’s “Dream Girl” way back in 1968 when she was cast in Sapnaon Ka Saudagar opposite Raj Kapoor, Hema Malini later teamed up with Bollywood’s Macho star Dharmendra and acted in a total of 29 films in the lead romantic role and in 4 other in non romantic roles. Of these 33 films, 18 are considered hits and 15 are not so successful ones.
As we all know, they got married in 1980, defying convention, and despite a 13 years age gap between them, they were considered as an evergreen couple in Bollywood. And this despite Hema being femininity personified and Dharamendra representing all that is masculine. Some of the biggest Hindi hits with Dharam Hema pair are Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Chacha Bhatija, Naya Zamana, Raja Jani, Jugnu etc.
About her marriage to Dharmendra, Hema has maintained that she ‘never took Dharmendra away from his first family.’ In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, sha said, “The minute I saw Dharam ji, I knew he was the man for me. I wanted to spend my life with him. I also wanted to make sure that the marriage hurt nobody. His first wife and children have never felt my intrusion in their lives. I married him, but I never took him away from his first family.”
