Asha Parekh started acting as a child artist and was then called Baby Asha Parekh. Bimal Roy
has cast her in the film Maa, after he witnessed her beautiful dance performance in a show.
He was so impressed by her talents, that he again cast her for his movie Baap Beti (1954).
Asha went on to do a few more roles as a child and took a break to complete her schooling.
At the age of 16, she was cast by Nassir Hussain and Subosh Mukherjee in the lead role for
Dil Deke Dekho. It was a great break for her as she was chosen to play the role against super
star Shammi Kapoor.
It was the beginning of her association with Nassir who then chose her to act in more
movies like Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Teesri Manzil, Baharon Ke Sapne and Caravan. Parekh
was offered many dramatic roles also in films like Do Badan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki,
Shakti Samanta, Kati Patang and Pagla Kahin Ka. After her phase of taking up lead roles was
over, she continued being associated with the film industry as a producer and director. She
was the first female Chairperson of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) and has
received many awards for her contribution to the film industry.
