Born in the family of actors, it was as if Ratna was destined to act. Her mother Dina Pathak and elder
sister Supriya Pathak are well known actresses. Pathak remembers her upbringing as a strong
woman as she was surrounded by many independent women while growing up, so being career-
oriented was always in her plans for life. She graduated from Elphinstone College, Mumbai and went
on to study from the National School of Drama in Delhi. During the rehearsals of Sambhog Se Sanyas
Tak, she met Naseeruddin Shah and married him in 1982.

During the 80s, she appeared in a series of powerful roles in movies such as Mandi, Mirch Masala,
and Heat And Dust. She became famous after Idhar Udhar, a Hindi serial was telecast in the 80s. It
was a new concept and much ahead of its time- two girls and boy shared a flat and none of them
had any sexual relationship with each other. Later, she did serials like Gubbare, A Mouthful of Sky
and Tara, one of the most famous ones is Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and people still appreciate her with
innuendos for her role of Maya Sarabhai.
