Actor

A renowned freedom fighter who later became an extremely famous Bollywood actor. Originally from Peshwar, Hangal began acting at the age of 52, his debut film was Teesri Kasam which was directed by Basu Bhattacharya and released in 1966. He went on to become a prominent face for character roles in Hindi films, majorly playing a father, uncle or relative of the protagonist. Some of his landmark performances are in the films such as, Namak, Shaukeen, Avtaar, Guddi,  and Naram Garam. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1961 by the government of India.

Hangal’s last film was Paheli which was directed by Amol Palekar. This film came into his life after a long break and he managed to step out of the house, only because he was in absolute love with his profession. One of the interesting facts about his last days is that, at he age of 97, he came on the sets of the then famous serial Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon on a wheelchair and wasn’t sure whether he would be able to act but as soon as the camera started rolling, the actor started performing irrespective of his age.
