47 year old Mamta Kulkarni,once the love interest of the hero in many films ended her film career by acting in a Bangladeshi film in Bengali. Her personal career was even more disastrous. She and her husband, Vicky Malhotra, considered a drug lord, ran into an unpleasant controversy when they were declared proclaimed offenders and had all their property confiscated.

However, when she started off, she had won the 1994 Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year for her performance in Ashiq Awara and soon she had offers to act against all popular heroes but she was choosy and would not take up an offer unless the role was substantial by her judgement. Even though she featured in a number of hit films between 1994 and 1995 like Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi and Baazi, she made matters difficult for herself by accusing Rajkumar Santoshi of ill doings, taking support from Chota Rajan, all of which led to her being shunned by the film makers.
