A talented artist who started life with ₹ 35/ per month as salary, ended up as one of the most popular characters on Indian TV. Betaal in Vikram Aur Betaal.

Sajjan, born in Jaipur in 1921, was a lyricist, film/TV actor and a stage actor. He however started his film career as an assistant to Kidar Sharma and Gajanan Jagirdar, both leading directors of the 40’s. He also wrote dialogues and acted in different roles in Prithvi Theatre. He made his debut in Dhanyavad in 1948 pairing against the legendary Hansa Wadkar, and slowly, in the 50’s and 60’s became a regular face in Hindi cinema. He played the Supporting Actor in numerous films and his last film as a hero was Do Chor.

In an interview in 1964 he had recounted a interesting anecdote. He was playing the role of the father to Nalini Jayant in Sargam and had to arrive at the studio well in time for the make up. The very next the day, the same Sajjan was playing a romantic role opposite the same Nalini Jayant in Muqquadar!

Sajjan Lal Purohit who once wanted to be a lawyer but landed up in the film industry instead once had a series of flops and actually gave up acting and started studying law. He felt that out of sight, he will soon be forgotten. However, he started getting offers for small character roles. He admitted he had no regrets and took life in his strides.
