Jaya Bachchan is an Indian actress and politician who was born in Jabalpur in 1948. She began acting
at the age of 15, in a film Mahanagar (Bengali), directed by Satyajit Ray. . She was able to establish a
strong foothold in the industry after the release of Guddi. She became popular because of her
naturalistic acting style which made the audience relate to her quickly. She is also an alumni of Film
and Television Institute (FTII), Pune and has applied her learnings in all her movies with elegant and
style.
Later she appeared in many successful films like, Anamika, Chupke Chupke, Abhimaan, Zanjeer,
Sholay, and Jawani Diwani. She has won 9 Filmfare Awards, with the prestigious Filmfare
Achievement Award in 2007. She was awarded Padma Shri in 1992 by the Government of India.
She is married to Amitabh Bachchan who is also an actor and is known as the ‘Superstar’ of Indian
film industry. She has two children from the marriage – Abhishek Bachchan (actor) and Shweta
Bachchan Nanda. In 2004, Jaya Bachchan was elected as the Member of Parliament in Uttar Pradesh,
representing Samajwadi Party, since then she has been re-elected many times.
