Actress

Spanning a career almost seven decades, Lalita Pawar occupies a very major position in Indian cinema.

Born April 18, 1916, she started working from the age of 9, and her last film was released in 1997, a year before her death. While her portrayal of Ms D’Sa in Anari, which won her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in 1959, will forever remain etched in the minds of film goers, she had nevertheless left her imprint as the wicked mother in law and as Manthara, who ill advised Queen Kaikeyi in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana.

Amba Laxman Rao Sagun, who later became Lalita Pawar was also a lead actress and a film Producer and she had acted as the leading lady in a number of films. An accident during a shoot damaged her left eye but she adapted her disfigurement to take up roles that suited her.

She died in Pune, where she stayed alone in 1998.

Certainly one of the greats of Indian cinema, she had once joked that her initials, LP, stood for Longest Playing Record.
