A product of Department of Indian Theatre of Punjab University, Chandigarh, where she had briefly met Anupam Kher whom she married latter, Kirron started her career acting in a Punjabi film, Aasra Pyar da in 1993, but till 1996, she appeared in only one film, Pestonji, in 1987. During this period, she struggled for a break, while continuing to perform on the stage. The theatre led to hosting three successful TV shows and she returned to cinema with Shyam Benegal’s Sardari Begum, which won her the National Jury Award in 1997. The success was followed by her performance in Rituparno Ghosh’s Bariwali which won her the National Award for the Best Actress, Her performance in Khamosh Paani was critically acclaimed and won her awards at international film festivals.

Kirron Kher slowly moved in to supporting roles and in 2014 General Elections she contested the Chandigarh seat which she won and repeated her success in 2019. One of her major agenda is to set up a film studio in Chandigarh.

She has been connected with social movements on female infanticide and cancer awareness while actively campaigning for Bharatiya Janata Party.
