Actor, Producer

Born in Meerut and brought up in Aligarh, Bharat Bhushan moved to Mumbai in 1941 from Kolkata where he had gone to set up an acting career. In 1941 he made his debut in Kidar Sharma’s Chitralekha, but he had to struggle till the making of Baiju Bawra in 1952 which gave him a permanent position in the Hindi film industry. The film also made Rafi Sahab, Naushad and Meena Kumari famous.

Bharat Bhushan had also turned producer and two of his big successful films were Basant Bahar and Barsaat ki Raat. He was certainly a big star in the 50’s and made judicious investments in real estate, books and cars. He was a voracious reader.

As many of the roles he portrayed were that of singers and mythological characters, a number of all time favourite Hindi songs were lipped by him, like Laut ke aaja mere meet, Phir wohi sham, Zindagi bhar nahi bhulegi barsaat ki raat.

Despite his success as an actor, his ventures as a producer were not so successful and in time he slowly sank into financial troubles. In order to recover and survive he had to dispose of all his properties, cars and other assets and died a poor man in 1992.

Bharat Bhushan had won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1956 for his role in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
