The entire nation had great difficulty in coming to terms with the last published photograph of Vinod Khanna. He was down with bladder cancer and his fans could not come to terms with his appearance. They were looking for the dashing hero they had followed for years and given us some stellar performances like Amar Akbar Antony, Qurbani, Imtihaan and many such hits.
Vinod Khanna was not just a film actor, he was also a cricketer who played alongside Buddhi Kunderan and Eknath Solkar, was a disciple of Acharya Rajneesh and in fact left the film industry in 1982 to be with Osho. He was a member of Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected as the Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur between 1998 – 2009 and again between 2014 – 2017.
His first major break came from Gulzar who cast him in Mere Apney and later cast him again in a film based on the Nanavati case, Achanak.Two of his major films with Feroz Khan were Qurbani and Dayavaan. He is one of the rare actors who started in villain roles and acted in almost a total of almost 50 multi hero films, more than any other film “hero”.
He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1975 for Haath ki Safai and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He died in 2017 at the age of 70 and received Dadashaeb Phalke Award in 2017 posthumously. Click here for some of his landmark movies.
