Pyasa, the all time classic by Guru Dutt is considered one of the top 100 films ever made. Rehman had given a classic performance in Pyasa. Not only Pyasa, Rehman will be remembered for his performances in many Guru Dutt films: Saheb Bibi Ghulam, Chaudivin Ka Chand.
Rehman was an accidental entrant in the film industry. Born in Lahore he joined Royal Air Force and trained as a pilot. He decided to change his career and joined as the Third Assistant to director Vishram Bedekar in Pune. Itso happened that Vishram needed an Afghan who could wear a Pashtun turban and Rehman fitted the bill. That was how he started getting lead roles and as time passed he shifted to playing supporting roles. He received the Filmfare nomination for the Best Supporting Actor four times for Phir Subah Hogi, Chaudavin ka Chand, Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam and Dil ne Phir Yaad Kiya.
Rehman had a majestic voice but chain smoking resulted in throat cancer and made him voiceless. Excessive addiction to alcohol resulted in a number of heart attacks and he passed away in 1981 in Mumbai.
Part of his family are settled in Pakistan and are well known in their film industry.
