Dev Sahab, born Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand, was one of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s co passenger in the famous bus ride to Lahore in 1999. The story goes that one morning he made a solitary trip to the Government College where he had studied and finding it closed, asked the gateman to open it for him. The gate man was so elated to have the famous visitor that he immediately complied.

Dev Sahab was forever the evergreen hero. He started life as a clerk at a salary of ₹65/ and after seeing Ashok Kumar act in Achhut Kannya and Kismet developed a desire to act in films. Alongwith his first film Hum Ek Hain, he was in the spotlight for his legendary affair with Suraiya. Later he married Kalpana Kartik and by the end of 1950’s he had become one of the most successful stars of Hindi cinema. Many of his films like Taxi Driver, Baazi, Nau Do Gyarah, CID are still considered landmarks in Indian cinema. From late sixtees to seventees he presented Jewel Thief, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Johny Mera Naam, Prem Pujari and a series of runaway hits.

He even founded Navketa with his brother Chetan Anand and has produced a number of films including Guide. Some of the most popular Hindi songs of the past 60 years featured Dev Sahab, often called India’s Gregory Peck.

Actor Director, Sekhar Kapur is his nephew. He has been politically active, stood up against the Emergency and was a member of IPTA.

He died in London at the age of 88.
